Born to a family with mixed origins, containing German, French, and English ancestors. His father Raymond Collins Martin was half Italian, whereas his mother Margaret Brady Martin was half Irish. He spent his childhood in Broadway before moving with his parents and his two young sisters: Janet Martin Patten and Darleen Martin Lapinski to Bayonne
